Commodities Futures

"They not just getting rich...they're getting even" - Trading Places [1983]

Speculative trading in the futures markets by major institutional investors and hedgefunds, has been discussed in the context of the rise in the price of food worldwide. The speculation such as it is, takes into account the availability of agricultural resources going forward. Demand for biofuels also plays a role. Commodities futures are traded in major exchange markets worldwide and are often quoted in US dollars. CBT is the Chicago Board of Trade. NYB is the New York Board of Trade as featured in the film Trading Places where Louis Winthorpe III and Bill Ray Valentine famously muscle into the frozen concentrated orange juice pit. The other letters indicate the trade time, for instance N09 is July 2009, and what the commodity is: SB, SE (sugar), C (Corn), O (Oats), BO (Soybean Oil). The production of soybean oil has been associated with deforestation in the Amazon basin of South America. Many of the far future contracts don't trade as often as the nearer future.
